Realism

New York Movie. Edward Hopper. 1939. oil on canvas.

I've studied art enough to figure out my favorite kind of art. And it's gotta be Realism, like socialism realism. I enjoy the dark and dreariness of the paintings; the random windows and empty alleyways. But I really enjoy the message behind the American Scene Painters. It's like since we are sorta beginning to go through another depression type era, I can relate to both of these types of art. The thing I really like about the art is the details of the paintings, how actually REAL it looks. And most of them were done in oils, my favorite medium.

I had to do a project last year on a certian artist, and I choose Edward Hopper. Hopper was a perfect example of both the darkness of the Depression and the hope people had. Originally, he was a student of one of The Eight. But then he went to France for a while and painted. When he came back, he practiced this dark art, but as he got older, the 1940s and 50s, he painted scenes at his vacation spots by the beach and in places in the Midwest.
